Free GPS Software – An Up-to-Date List

There are many types of Free GPS Software on the Internet. I’ve sorted through various lists to compile this source. If you know of any additions or corrections to be made, please let me know. This list is current as of December 05, 2012 and contains 648 entries.

The list is now sorted as to operating system or device – choose from below. Please note there is a section for platform-independent / all operating systems, so make sure you check there for programs that will work no matter what setup you have.

GPS Track Editor

GPS track is an ordered sequence of points with latitude, longitude, date, time, and maybe some other parameters. They are not precise due to different factors and that is why a track can look ugly and strange. GPS Track Editor offers a way to make tracks look better.

GIS E GPS RESOURCES FOR LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT AND URBAN FORESTRY

These instructions were written by students in Professor Berle’s GPS/GIS class. They were meant to be used by other novices, and are NOT in “computereze.” The GPS instructions are specific for ArcPad software on a Trimble GPS unit, using GPS Correct for post-processing. In most cases, the GIS instructions are for ArcGIS 9.x software.

You can choose your map type:

Generic Routable
Generic Routable (testing new style)
Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite)
Generic Nautical (non-routable)

The goal of this website is to advance the OpenStreetMap project by providing free worldwide Garmin maps based upon OpenStreetMap data. I hope that people who appreciate this website will choose to contribute to the OpenStreetMap project to improve their own experience and make the opensource world map even better.

The maps are meant to be generic and will probably provide best routing results for car-drivers, however other routing options should work reasonably well too.

This website generates four different configurations of your personal free Garmin map:

  • Installer for Garmin BaseCamp/MapSource (Windows).
  • Map for the Mac OS X version of Garmin BaseCamp.
  • Combined image for direct manual placement on the GPS device (gmapsupp.img)
  • A zip file just containing all the Garmin map tiles as selected on this website. This is useful for Linux users (e.g. Qlandkarte)

Once you’ve selected the map tiles, filled out the form and clicked the ‘Build maps’ button, your request is queued on the server. The server processes each request in four steps:

  1. Running Mkgmap to combine the requested tiles into a gmapsupp.img.
  2. Using Nullsoft Scriptable Installer to combine the requested tiles into a Windows MapSource installer. The script used for this build is also included: ‘map.nsi’.
  3. Use the command line version of JaVaWa MapConverter to create a version of the map compatible with BaseCamp for Mac OS X.
  4. Finally, an e-mail is then sent to you when all this is done.

To complete your request please browse to the website listed in the e-mail and download the map configuration(s) you’re interested in.

The routable Garmin maps are created using the opensource tools Splitter and Mkgmap originally created by OSM user Steve Ratcliffe. Splitter accepts raw OpenStreetMap data and splits it into workable areas which then are converted into Garmin maps by Mkgmap. Splitter creates a template file which lists the coordinates and availability of the tiles. This template file is used by this website to show the Garmin tiles on the world map (the blue squares).

The Openfietsmap is a routable map for bicycle touring. The cartography is licensed under the cc by-nc-sa license. You are free to use and share the map for non-commercial purposes.
