COFFEEDEX: Super simple editing on OpenStreetMap

COFFEEDEX: Super simple editing on OpenStreetMap

When we built iD, the default OpenStreetMap editor, we made sure we could recombine its parts to create a new wave of experimental, minimal, and unusual editors. OpenStreetMap is more than a map, and more than streets: it’s a deep database of millions of attributes. What if OpenStreetMap editors were purpose-specific and radically simpler to use than general-purpose tools?

OpenStreetMap is more than a map, and more than streets: it’s a deep database of millions of attributes. What if OpenStreetMap editors were purpose-specific and radically simpler to use than general-purpose tools?

COFFEEDEX fiddles with the definition of what OpenStreetMap editors can be. It’s built with parts of iD, like osm-auth, combined with brilliant community projects, like Overpass Turbo. The open source code is built with technologies we’re using in future Mapbox products: Facebook’s excellentReact library, Reflux, and next-generation JavaScript syntax transpiled by 6to5.

It’s a proof of concept that aims to answer the question of “how much does a cup of coffee cost, everywhere?” In stark contrast to iD, it isn’t focused on geometry or georeferencing, but on a single attribute in existing data. It’s customizable for many use cases that at their core are questions about attributes in OpenStreetMap’s data.

Glob3 Mobile: a 3D virtual globe for web browsers and mobile devices

October 23, 2014

Glob3 Mobile is an open source 3D multiplattform virtual globe engine, running in mobile devices (Android and Apple) and in HTML5 web browsers. In this first version, it allows to connect to any OGC WMS public layer, and show it on the globe.

Glob3 Mobile is also a framework for virtual globe development. It allows to write plugins directly in Javascript, and these plugins can run in the three plattforms (Android / Apple / web browsers). The project is currently in development, but first plugin examples can be tested in this site.

At the short- tem, we are working to gradually add some features that already exists in other globes (show photos and videos, display buildings, acces to another geo-standards (KML, WFS, GML), etc.)
